HERAT, Afghanistan (Mar. 15) – Within development projects on health sector carried out in cooperation with the Department of Health of the province of Herat, yesterday, the new intensive care room of pediatric hospital in Herat was inaugurated - attended by Commander of Regional Command West Brigadier General Alessandro VELTRI - and produced by the Italian Cooperation for Development of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that works in conjunction with the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team.At opening day participated, among others, the Head of Department of Health, Dr Gholam Said RASHID, the Director of Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Abdul Karim HALIMI, the Commander of the Provincial Reconstruction Team, Colonel Claudio DEI, and Dr. Marco URAGO, Executive of the Italian Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Forei gn Affairs.
It was also the occasion for an important donation of a kit for mechanical ventilation in very young patients with respiratory failure, carried out by the Italian Non-profit Institution “For a Smile” of Turin through the Italian 1st Maneuver Regiment, a units stationed in the province of Turin.The equipment, once it arrived at Camp Arena - the base that houses the Regional Command West, the Italian-led command NATO based Brigade "Sassari" - has been taken over by the Commander of Joint Adherence Support Group, Lieutenant Colonel Pietro LO GIUDICE, which gave the intensive unit to the hospital at the same ceremony.Dr. RASHID thanked all present “for this umpteenth example of attention in respect of the provincial health system. The new intensive care room and the equipment received, will enable medical staff to provide our little patients a more comprehensive and focused intervention in the early states of emergency".General Veltri, at the end of a visit to various units of the hospital where children were hospitalized more than 120 children, confirmed "the greatest commitment of ISAF in carrying out those projects, as in terms of public health, as in terms of school and education, to protect children and to look at new generations as the engine for the future and the progress of the Country".
The pediatric hospital in Herat, second largest in Afghanistan, was opened in 2007 and can accommodate about 150 children. For this reason, it is one of the most important projects carried out by "Italy System", the result of the synergy among the various components of the PRT, in the implementation of which has invested around 900,000 euros and that today, thanks to the Italian Cooperation for Development, it is properly equipped and can count on a Guest House, a facility used to welcome the families of hospitalized children, and it is supported by medical personnel of AISPO, Italian Non-Governmental Organization of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.
