HERAT, Afghanistan (Mar. 17) – This morning, as part of health
development project carried out in cooperation with the Department of Health of the province of Herat, the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team of Regional Command West has opened in a new hospital in Gazar Gah district.
The building, valued approximately 95 thousend euros made by local firms and labor due to funds made available by the Italian Ministry of Defense, complete of all primary health services, will provide adequate medical care to the residents of this particularly populous part of the town.The medical center is composed of a large main entrance that also serves as a waiting room, a wing used to house women and children and another reserved for men including general services.Within the project, members of AISPO (a “San Raffaele” Hospital in Milan NGO), and exexutives from the Italian Cooperation for Development of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Dr. Marco URAGO, will provide staging of the premises provisioning furniture and equipment necessary for the forthcoming operation of the structure.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Commander of Regional Command West Brigadier General Alessandro VELTRI, the chief of Herat Department of Health, Dr Ghulam Shaid RASHED, the chief of women's affairs department, Manija SADIQI, several important senators of the central government in Kabul and the Commander of the Provincial Reconstruction Team, Colonel Claudio DEI.The present authorities have thanked the General VELTRI for the closeness and the usual attention of the Regional Command West to meet the needs of health in the province of Herat, where - as underlined by the same General VELTRI - "the right of every citizen to health and with it education, justice and religious worship, is fundamental to the welfare and prosperity of the country. These are the cornerstones for individual’s elevation of dignity in every society and therefore of primary interest to the entire Afghan people. It 'a commitment that local institutions and ISAF have long data - concluded the General VELTRI - and together we will continue to press ahead with full respect for the local cultures, customs and traditions". In fact, the Italian Provincial Recontruction Team has so far invested only in the health sector, about 3 million euros, to build, in Herat province, the children's hospital - one of the most important construction of the PRT worth about 950 thousand euros which can accommodate about 150 children - and other 14 hospitals.In the implementation plan of works to be done for the year 2010, a further investment amounting to approximately 365 thousand euros will be earmarked for the construction of two new hospitals and to restructure the system of connection to the mains supply of the regional hospital of Herat.At these projects are added courses in "First Aid in traumatic emergencies" and "emergency and obstetric interventions" on behalf of nomadic peoples of the province of Herat, and numerous doctor visits conducted by health personnel of the Provincial Team Recontruction inside and outside the base.
