BAGHDIS, Afghanistan (April 8, 2010) – Two convoys of Spanish troops began humanitarian operations for residents in Khan Homayes, which is in the Qades district just east of Qal’Eh-Ye Now, and Acheska, which is just north of Qal’Eh-Ye Now, Apr. 7.
The first location has had difficulties raising crops because of attacks by insurgents. Young people in the town had been dedicated to defending the population and the school had not been providing classes. Additionally, the local clinic had been closed for several months because providers feared attacks. The assistance provided by Spanish troops is aimed at changing that.
When they entered the town, Spanish troops were received with enthusiasm by the people and the village elder who thanked the troops on behalf of the town.
Troops first delivered food and scholastic material during the first shipment. In addition, troops delivered material in to help residents improve their sanitary conditions.
Spanish troops also delivered supplies to the town of Acheska, located a few kilometers to the north. In February, insurgents attacked Spanish troops there.
During the humanitarian aid trip, the troops brought medicine, scholastic material and other medical and veterinary aid for residents.
The Spanish troops said they are dedicated to continuing their efforts to fulfill the missions that will help residents of the Afghan towns in their area of responsibility. They said the bonds of mutual commitment will improve security throughout the region.
