Heart: Provincial Reconstruction Team inagurated the Fossano Plaza, a piece of Italy in the heart of the Afghan city

The opening ceremony of the new ´Fossano Plaza’ was held this morning in one of the oldest Herat´s areas, Mohammad Mahal.

The project was sponsored by the municipality of Fossano, a little town in the north of Italy and funded by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Fossano, with a contribution of about 15,000 euro. The works were carried out by local workers belonging to Herat Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), which has long been concerned with the redevelopment and improvement of living conditions of this area´s population.

The works required the reclamation of the entire area with the construction of sewage canals and levelling of land, in order to create a green space with trees, benches and an equipped playground for children.

The ceremony was attended by the mayor of Herat, Dr. Trak, the head of Economic Department, Eng. Aswad, the PRT Commander, Colonel Emmanuel Aresu and Sergeant Mignacca in his double role as a Fossano city councilor and member of the Italian PRT based on 1st Mountain Artillery Regiment. Along with them, there were a large representative of local residents and children who "inagurated" the playground with their games.

Commenting on the event, Dr. Trak stated: "We sincerely thank the city of Fossano and the PRT for this important project that has helped to improve health in an area that, until a few weeks ago, and due to the precarious health conditions in which they live in,  was a cause of illness, especially among children. The opening of this playground will be a sign of hope, mainly for children, who represent the future of this Country. "

With this initiative, the municipality of Fossano, home of the Italian Army 1st Regiment Artillery wanted to show its closeness to its soldiers and to contribute actively in the  reconstruction and development, not only economical but also social of the town of Herat, improving the daily living conditions of its people.
