Herat. ANSF and Regional Command West conduct District Stability Operations in the remote districts of Western Afghanistan

Herat, 30 August 2010 – An important ‘District Stability’ Operation was conducted over 6 days by the ANSF with the support of the Italian PRT and RC-W’s troops in Chest-e-Sharif, a remote district located 140 km from Herat.

The operation consisted in a number of Key Leaders Engagements with formal and informal authorities to discuss the security situation and the development needs in the area. ANSF and ISAF forces also conducted reconnaissance patrols at the polling stations to assess security and accessibility.

The culminating event was the shura held on the last day, which was attended by over 250 elders, mullah and GIRoA representatives. General Claudio Berto, Regional Command West’s commander, introduced a 100,000 Euro project for the reconstruction of the road linking Herat to Chest-e-Sharif. The works will eventually contribute to the development of the marble industry in Chest-e-Sharif.

On the occasion of the Shura, the Italian PRT announced the construction of a 100m-deep well and donated goods worth 36,000 Euro.
