On May 27, 2010 PRT Chaghcharan engineers destroyed about 500 kg of different kind of ammunition, which was collected by Disbandment of illegal armed groups (DIAG) committee.
DIAG committee informed PRT about full storage of collected explosives and asked PRT for support destroying it. In total 55 mortar shells and rockets and about 1000 machinegun rounds were handed over to PRT engineers for demolition.
All ammunition was taken to safe place and destroyed. All operation took more than half a day.
DIAG committee acting in Ghowr province and consisting of governor of province, Chief of local police, Chief of National Directorate of Security, other representatives of different local departments, leaders of religious community work closely with International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers serving in Ghowr province.
Mission of the committee is to collect weapons so separate districts named safe. These districts may apply for international community’s and government’s of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan support given for development projects.
Capabilities of local engineers are limited to destroy such amount of explosives. Usually when unexploded ordinance is found they address to Lithuania led PRT, whose EOD team is capable and has needed skills to neutralize explosives.
PRT is combined civilian and military mission as part of NATO ISAF. Lithuania led PRT started its mission in 2005. Camp of PRT located in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghowr province. Main mission of PRT is to support GIRoA in expansion of its influence in the province, ensure security and condition for development of the province.
Beside Lithuanians, officers and civilians from Denmark, Japan, Georgia, Romania, Ukraine and USA are working together in this PRT.
