The Italian Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs are providing a combined and continuous support to both the regional and paediatric hospitals in Herat. Both medical facilities were recently renovated through a partnership between the Italian Agency for Cooperation & Development and the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), and received yesterday two ultrasound scanners and an incubator respectively.
The medical equipment were donated by an Italian NGO and by a municipality of Southern Italy, the latter to commemorate in a concrete way an Italian soldier who died in 2004 after a car accident in Kabul.
A new electricity substation and a well drill – worth 190,000 Euros and funded by the Italian Ministry of Defence - were inaugurated the same day at the two hospitals
The Head of the Public Health Department expressed his gratitude : “we thank Italy for the continuous support given to Afghan people while remembering the Italian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan”.
