A new school in Herat province dedicated to the Italian soldiers died near Bala Murghab.

The Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Herat announced yesterday that the new school in Karokh, 40 km from Herat, will be named - once completed – after sergeant Massimiliano Ramadù and corporal Luigi Pascazio, the two Italian members of the “Taurinense” alpine brigade killed four days ago by the explosion of an improvised explosive device in the district of Bala Murghab, Badghis province.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new school took place in Karokh the same day of the attack. The new school, featuring 12 classrooms and funded by the Italian Ministry of Defence, will house more than 1200 pupils from 10 villages in the surrounding area.

"As soon as we learned about the death of the two comrades from our brigade, by mutual consent with the Afghan authorities, we decide to name the new school after our fallen comrades, to offer everyone a concrete memory of their sacrifice", said colonel Emmanuele Aresu, the commander of the Italian PRT, based on the 1st mountain artillery regiment. The structure, worth over 100,000 Euros, is part of the Italian PRT master plan for Heart province, which includes projects in the fields of education, health and basic infrastructure. The school will be completed by the end of September by local workers, according to the practice adopted by the PRT to encourage economic development in the same area that will benefit from the projects.
