Spanish help for the needed vicinity of Jafari

Herat, Afghanistan (December 23) – A new school opened in Majkhandak Village, Karukh District, Afghanistan, Dec. 22, increasing the village’s education capacity by 1,300 for primary and secondary Afghan students.

Students, parents and community leaders toured the school after a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and Italian soldiers distributed backpacks and supplies to incoming students.
Regional Command-West commander, Italian Brig. Gen. Marcello Bellacicco, described the school’s opening as fundamental to the future of Afghanistan.
Further, Bellacicco said while he was happy the provincial reconstruction team led project was complete, it’s the responsibility of Afghans to attend and improve the school.
Herat Provincial Governor Dr. Daud Saba asserted educating Afghan children is the best chance for sustained improvement in the country.
Saba further acknowledged despite the new school, the district’s education system is plagued with over-crowding and lack of supplies. Saba said he will continue working with RC-West and the Afghan government on future projects.
The school, requested by the Herat Department of Education, fit into the ”Quick Impact Project” requirements and adds to the scarce number of educational facilities in the district.
The project cost around 100.000 Euros all funded by the Italian government, is part of the “Praesidium Operation” in Herat, and responded the demand of the Herat education department. This operation run by the Italian CIMIC Center has the aim to improve development in Herat province by implementing quick impact projects where needed.
The new school has 12 classrooms full equipped with blackboards, benches and tables. The project also included toilets, a well and an external sewage system.
The Karukh District has 34 schools with 19,200 students and 600 teachers. Of the students, 9,400 are female.
