Qal´eh-Ye Now authorities reintegrate two former Taliban members

HERAT, Afghanistan (May 26) – Two insurgents turned in their personal weapons Sunday to authorities at the Badghis province headquarters of the Provincial Coordination Office in Qal’ eh-Ye Now.


Afghan National Police Col. Golam, head of the criminal investigation department, conducted an interview of the former Taliban members with members of the International Security Assistance Force’s Spanish contingent present.

The two Taliban belonged to the Akbal Sorkhabi group, which is currently operating in the area of Moqur and Qades. The Taliban who were reintegrated, according to the interviewees, had rifles, machine guns and RPGs but not mines or improvised explosive devices. They were moving by horses and motorcycles.


The two former insurgents said they wanted to return because they know the insurgency will not win and did not wish to be on the losing side. They also believe there will be more Taliban members will return to their communities.

Both individuals were delivered to the police station mentored by Spanish troops. The authorities followed the procedure according to current standard protocol for these cases.
