Ghor province Peace Jirga was held in Chaghcharan

The Peace Jirga of Ghor was held in Chaghcharan, the Capital city of Ghor province in the western region of Afghanistan. The Jirga was organized by the Governor’s office and The Department of Borders and Tribal Affairs in Ghor. More than ten dozens of representatives of GIRoA, local elders and spiritual leaders from different districts of the province participated in the event.

The Governor of Ghor province, Dr. Abdullah Heiwad, Heads of Departments, members of UNAMA and ULEMA, representatives from different province institutions and delegation of Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) participated in this meeting.

The main subjects emphasized during conference were the importance of peace and enduring security in the province, the Afghanistan Peace and Reintegration Program (APRP) and the Islamic attitude towards peace and reconciliation. Participants of Peace Jirga expressed their hope, that there will be a possibility to find the exact ways of solution of major issues concerning peace in the region.

Representatives of GIRoA, local elders and mullahs during their speeches stressed the importance of peace, security and reconciliation according Islamic traditions. They emphasized the necessity to maintain a long-lasting security in the region and implement APRP in the province.

The Governor of Ghor province stressed that the main issue is to solve tribal conflicts and convince them to join reconciliation process. “Our people deserve peace and we have to strive for durable results in solving conflicts. Therefore, the message about peace and reconciliation must be spread for all population in Ghor and it has to reach all remote villages and communities”, governor said.

The participants of the Peace Jirga mentioned that religious leaders, tribal elders and community members are also responsible for the future of the country: for supporting governance, development and security in the province. So they all together have to put effort and act in a proper way according the Islam philosophy.

The Ghor Peace Jirga is one of series of events that will be held across the country with the support of the Ministry of Border and Tribal Affairs and the US Embassy Public Affairs Section.
