Afghan National Army instructors taught Military Operations in Urban Terrain training to 2nd Company ANA recruits at Camp Zafar, Herat Province, Feb. 21, 2011.
The trainers led the instruction of recruits through Basic Warrior Course, the ANA’s version of Basic Military Training, with the help of coalition mentors.
The training included clearing buildings of enemy personnel while receiving simulated enemy contact in and out of the structure, and is held during the first of three phases of BWC.
U.S. Army Spc. Dale Dillahunty, an ANA mentor from Bravo Co., Task Force 3/4 oversaw the MOUT training.
“We provide morale and advisory support to the ANA training instructors,” Dillahunty said. “The instructors are experienced. They have had anywhere from four to six months of instructor training before being selected for this position.”
Dillahunty was impressed with the trainers, he said.
“This is very close to how American Soldiers are trained,” said Dillahunty. “Whether it is rifle marksmanship, responding to squad attacks or ambushes, they actually do it very close to the way we do it.”
The recruits picked up on it very well and follow through, said Dillahunty.
“It is exciting for them,” he said. “Some groups get more interactive than others but their curiosity builds excitement as they watch the groups ahead of them go through the course.”
The ANA 2nd Co. commander said he was pleased with the training, and that he is looking forward to expanding the facilities to allow even more training opportunities for his soldiers.
