Qala-i-Naw, Afghanistan (July, 19th) – Today, in the Spanish Base “Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo”, home of PRT Qala-i-Naw, took place the Transfer of Authority ceremony, between the incoming and outgoing Commanders of the Spanish troops deployed in Afghanistan. The ceremony was presided by the ISAF Regional Command West Commander, Brigadier General Claudo Berto and was attended by civilian and military representatives, as well as Badghis province governor Mr. Shinwari Delbar Jan Arman.
During the ceremony, Colonel Miguel Martin Bernardi –Commander of the outgoing contingent- was awarded by General Berto with the NATO medal. Afterwards, the handover ceremony was carried out. Colonel Luis Martinez Trascasa took over the contingent´s flag, as a sign of the new authority received.
In an emotional farewell speech, Colonel Martin Bernardi stressed “the outstanding performance carried out by the contingent during last four months”. Good examples of this performance are the construction and refurbishment of several schools, bridges and Qala-i-now´s orphanage, as well as ponds, pavements and a police posts along Lithium road. More than 30 tons of humanitarian aid has been delivered along with school, sports and agricultural materials in areas previously controlled by insurgency.
In support of the governmental authorities, the Spanish troops have provide with security measures to hold 3 important Shuras and two peace Jirgas, some of them had not been held in 30 years due to the lack of security. During last four months, the PRT soldiers have patrolled more than 200,000 kilometres.
Colonel Martinez Trascasa addressed the attendees referring the firm commitment undertaken with the Afghan population, to support reconstruction and development in Afghanistan and make a more secure country to live in.
