HERAT, Afghanistan (May 5) – A joint effort between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence will enable Afghans to have two high standard health structures in the near future. The program is working on a pediatric hospital and a regional hospital completely restructured that will serve about one million Afghans. These facilities represent an example of constructive and concrete synergy between various Italian organizations in Herat. The civilian organization is headed by Dr. Sergio Maffettone. The military component of the Provincial Reconstruction Team is led by Italian Col. Emmanuele Aresu; and the Italian Cooperation in Herat is represented by Dr. Marco Urago.
The three organizations help foster Afghanistan's economic capital, work in reconstruction and stabilization of a key province in the Western region of Afghanistan. The Italian Cooperation, has provided for the restructuring of the Regional Hospital and the provision of medical equipment for the four main departments: first aid, radiology, laboratory analysis and operating rooms. The total investment in the project is more than 1.2 million euro. The PRT, through military engineers, which operates in CIMIC Centre has funded the hub transformation work and the connection to the main distribution network. The network is more than 5 km away from the hospital. The Italian Ministry of Defence contributed 180 thousand euro for this project.
The Herat PRT began construction of the Pediatric Hospital in 2008 with an investment of more than 850 thousand euro. The hospital houses offices for the departments of health and a guesthouse for the staff. More than one million euro was spent by Italian Cooperation on equipping developing support and training for medical and paramedical personnel. The Italian Cooperation also provided support by purchasing medicines, free transport of patients from regional to paediatric hospital and meals for the staff. The pediatric hospital, which has 100 beds, over the past year has treated more than 15,000 patients, of which 7,000 were hospitalized. This hospital is moreover closely related with health activities lead in support of the population by military medical personnel of Italian PRT, that, since 2005, have visited more than 23,000 patients across the district. Since 2008, the PRT personnel use the pediatric hospital for cases that require more complex care or hospitalization.
